chocking

What causes it?

Usually, choking in small children is caused by a small foreign object blocking one of the major airways. This may be a small toy they’ve put in their mouth and inadvertently swallowed, or a small piece of food they haven’t chewed properly.

If children run or play with objects in their mouth, there’s an increased risk that the object will accidentally get into the trachea (windpipe) or airways.

Some infections that cause swelling of the airways or produce excessive or thick secretions (for example, epiglottitis and severe tonsillitis) can lead to choking.

Who’s affected?

Children under three years are particularly vulnerable to choking caused by a foreign object in their airways because their trachea and bronchi are small and they’ve not yet developed full control of the muscles of their mouth and throat.

What are symptoms?

Choking often begins with small coughs or gasps as the child tries to draw in breath around the obstruction or clear it out. This may be followed by a struggling sound or raspy squeaking whispers as the child tries to communicate their distress.

The child may thrash around and drool and their eyes may water. They may flush red and then turn blue. However, some children - particularly babies - can be remarkably silent as they choke.

What’s the treatment?

The diagnosis becomes obvious as the symptoms develop. Treatment consists of trying to remove the obstruction and helping the child re-establish normal breathing.

  • Remove the object carefully only if you can see it - don’t dig around in the hope of finding it.

If this isn’t successful:

  • Give five back slaps, with a baby lying along your arm, head low and chin supported, or an older child leaning forwards.

If this doesn’t work:

  • Give five chest thrusts with two fingers placed on their breastbone with the baby lying on its back; for older children, give downward thrusts with the heel of the hand on their breastbone.

If this doesn’t work:

  • Older children may be given abdominal thrusts using the heel of the hand just below the ribs. The child can then be rolled on to their side and the back slaps repeated.

Shock

When a person is in shock always consider it a life threatening condition. Any time the body has reached this state it is because the blood pressure has reached a point too low to sustain life. Severely low blood pressure can be brought on by a low blood volume, extensive relaxation of the blood vessel walls or the inadequate pumping action of the heart. This type of low blood pressure is much more serious than that found in fainting. As the blood pressure drops when a person is in shock the body cells receive an inadequate supply of blood and can quickly be permanently damaged and die.

The low blood pressure that creates shock can occur due to low blood volume or the inadequate pumping action of the heart. Symptoms of shock my begin with confusion, tiredness or sleepiness, cold, sweaty skin that appears bluish and pale. In most cases when the skin is pressed on a person who is in shock the color returns much slower than normal. Unless a slow heart beat is causing the shock the pulse will be weak but rapid and a network of bluish lines may appear under the skin. In most cases the blood pressure will drop so low that it can’t be measured and the patient may not be able to sit up without losing consciousness. If the shock has resulted from over dilation of the blood vessels, the skin will appear warm and flushed in the early stages of shock.

First you got to check for danger e.g Smell for the Gas,move any thing away from the person that could harm them, and make sure you don’t put your self in danger. Then you got to get a response Shake the patient to make sure they are unconscious because they might be asleep, deaf, speak another language or listening to music. Then you got to check the airways Look to see if their are any blockage because you don’t want to push the blockage any further down if they have one. lastly you got to do the CPR, 30 compressions on the chest and then tilt the head back and hold the nose and do mouth to mouth twice and then do another 30 compressions and then do mouth to mouth again twice. and then keep doing this procedure until the ambulance comes.

Entering an accident

If i was entering a accident and i saw an unconscious person,a bleeding person,a fractured person, a shocked person, a o.k person and a recently deceased person who would i go to first and why?

1. i would go to the unconscious person first because i need to check their airway to see if anything is blocking it then i would put the person in a recovery position and then if they are still not breathing then i would do CPR on the person.

2.Then i would go to the bleeding person i would have to act quickly as they are losing blood, i would get a bandage and bandage wherever they are bleeding from and put pressure on it.

3. Then the fractured person, i would see what the person has broken, then be careful not to move it than much.

4. Then the shocked person, i would keep them calm, keep talking to the person and wrap them in a blanket to keep warm.

5. Then the O.K person, i would ask the person if they are o.k and if they got any cuts and bruises.

6. Then lastly the recently deceased person. i would call the police and report where the accident is so they can come and remove the body.

We did a mock interview for a job in a nursery,

First the manager asked the basic questions e.g. whats your name, how did you get here.

Then she asked ”I can see from your CV that you have completed a work experience placement in a nursery.  What did you learn at this placement?”           I said that my confidence had grown because I met new people and that their routines are the same e.g. breakfast, lunch, dinner and sleep and they do lively activities in the morning and calm activities in the afternoon. I also said that the children do a lot of clearing up by themselves, I said this because when they get older they need to learn by themselves.

Then the next question she asked was “We have a brand new high tech electronic communication system in our nursery. What IT skills and experience do you have that would help you use this system?” i said I have various skills such as using the internet for research for my health and social care coursework. I also said I use my mobile to communicate by texting my friends. and lastly I said I can use email by emailing teachers from my health and social care class if I get stuck on homework or coursework. the manager then asked how is email gonna help in a nursery? so I said its helpful because if you got any problems then you can email the staff.

Lastly she asked “can you tell me what experience you have of first aid that would help you in the job of nursery worker?” I said I have learnt to do the recovery position, CPR and how to bandage. I also said I know how to ring for an ambulance. Then she asked, “a lot of children do suffer with asthma, what would you do if one of them suffered with an asthma attack? would you be able to deal with that?” and I said yes you should calm them down and give them their asthma pump to them if they have got one. Then the manager asked “if a child fell off a climbing frame and broke their leg or arm what would you do”? I said you don’t move the leg or arm depending on what the child has broke. you keep the child calm and keep talking to them. Then the manager asked “what information would you give to the ambulance once its arrived” So I said how it happened, what time it happened and who I was with.

I think my interview went well but I should of gave more detail in some of the questions instead of giving the basic answers.

This is our training video for the recovery position so you people can know how to do it and why you should put people into the recovery position.

I firstly checked for danger as i didn’t want to put myself in danger to.

I then shook her gently and checked for response.

after that i checked to see if anything was blocked in the airway.

then i checked to see if Ashleigh is breathing,

after i checked her breathing i put her in the recovery position

i then checked her breathing again

we then put this video on imovies and zynab did a voiceover explaining what the video was about.

we put subheadings on the video in case deaf people are watching this video and can’t hear the video.

this training video was set in my nursery as Ashleigh fell off a climbing frame and hit her head.
